Freddy vs. Jason is the 2003 novelization of the film of the same name written by Stephen Hand and published by Black Flame.
Its relationship to the other A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th novelizations is ambiguous at the very best.
It is based on the screenplay.

Freddy Krueger once invaded the dreams of a generation to exact his deadly form of revenge and murder. Now Freddy has entered into the dreams of another master of evil, the unstoppable Jason Voorhees, plunging cinema's two greatest titans of terror into a battle to end all battles. Their battlegrounds are the leafy suburbs of Elm Street and the ydillic Camp Crystal Lake, and no one will be spared their fury. With their mortal souls facing an eternity of torture, the last few innocent survivors must make a final stand and destroy both of these evils forever!

Plot
The novel starts with the first scene from the film, but in far more graphic detail. While in the film the girl appeared to be about 10, in this novelization she is said to have been 5. The police arrive right after the girl is murdered and arrest Freddy Krueger.
It describes him testifying (baldfacedly lying) in court and his release on a technicality.
It describes him making a deal with the three Dream Demons, (the equivalent of) what's shown in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, which wasn't depicted in the film version of Freddy vs. Jason.
It references (the equivalent of) the beginning and ending of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, which wasn't depicted in the film version of Freddy vs. Jason.
It recounts (the equivalent of) the events of the first Friday the 13th movie.

- This novelization is a distinct story from the contents of The Nightmares on Elm Street Parts 1, 2, 3: The Continuing Story. It especially doesn't line up with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (novelization).
