A Nightmare on Elm Street is a slasher, horror film series and franchise that was written and directed by the late Wes Craven and is the under the ownership of Warner Bros. The series begins with the first A Nightmare on Elm Street film, which was released in 1984. The huge success of the film is what gave rise to the franchise. The overall plot of the film series centers around the main antagonist Freddy Krueger (portrayed by Robert Englund), a child killer who became a burnt apparition of his former self after he was burned alive by a mob of vengeful parents, whose children Freddy had killed while he was alive. Upon his return from the dead, he began terrorizing and killing the teenage children of the fictional town of Springwood, Ohio in their dreams, which can also kill them in the physical world. Though the series received mix reviews as a whole, it has a financial success in the box office, having grossed over $472 million dollars worldwide.

A crossover sequel Freddy vs. Jason, which took place after the events of the main A Nightmare on Elm Street series, was released in 2003. This film also serves as a sequel for the Friday the 13th series, following the film Jason goes to Hell: The final Friday. A remake of the first A Nightmare on Elm Street film was released in 2010, but it proved to be a huge disappointment towards critics. However, the remake was successful in the box office, which makes it the highest-grossing film in the entire franchise. In 2019, Wes Craven's estate began production on future A Nightmare on Elm Street projects, with pitches for both feature film and a potential HBO Max series. Furthermore, they intended to have Robert Englund resume his role as Freddy Krueger. A reboot is also in production, though it is still in development hell.
